Sept. 9-12 The Yellow Daisy Festival, Stone Mountain, Ga. Contact Special Events Dept., P.O. Box 778, Stone Mountain, Ga. 30086.
This is one of those shows that you wait all year long to do. It’s long days with very big crowds of people that come to shop. Several years ago the show expanded to 4 days because the crowds were too large for the park to handle in three days. It’s the only show we do that people walk around with suit cases and wagons to haul around what they buy at the show. Most of them make several trips to their car to unload and then back for more shopping.
Set-up is on Wednesday for most of the artists, 75 artists can set up on Tuesday for an additional $75.00. This year on Tuesday the remains of Hurricane Francis came through Atlanta and it rained all day with lots of wind. Wednesday was much better with only a few sprinkles.
Thursday and Friday the weather was perfect for an art show, the only problem was most of the artists I spoke with were not selling much. Thursday and Friday typically for us have been very slow and this year was different. We sold one small piece on Friday. Most of the artwork I saw go by our tent on these two to days were very low end crafty items. We kept telling ourselves, wait till Saturday!
Saturday morning starts off early here. The show doesn’t officially open till 10:00 am but there are crowds of enthusiastic shoppers here at 8:00am. We sold two good sizes pieces before 10:00, the official open of the show. The rest of Saturday went well for us, selling 6 pieces, that’s our average for one show. Sunday is usually good here for us but usually not as good as Saturday. This was about the same. We sold only two pieces on Sunday but one of them was one of our largest pieces so this year we actually did better than last year. This show is typically three to four times an average show for us. This year it was just under three times our average! I had heard a few gripes from artists on Saturday but most were saying that Sunday was better and most were saying this usually above average show was well above average for them again.
I did speak with two photographers and metal sculptor on Saturday that were not happy with sales and probably would not return next year. One of the photographers and the metal sculptor were doing this show on my recommendation and both told me they were not happy at all with sales. I really feel bad about recommending a show and then someone does not do well there. That’s why I always say “ find someone with a medium and price point similar to yours and get recommendations from them.” I can only tell you where we do well and do report on other mediums as well but there are no guarantees in this business.
Break down can be a bit hectic with 450 artists trying to leave at the same time. You do have the option to break down on Monday here and it’s a lot less hectic. We usually go out to dinner after the show, go back to our hotel and rest a bit and then go back to the show around 10:00pm to break down. It’s worked very well for us the past few years. Getting around the loops here are a bit tight with trailers, trees and rv’s.
This is definitely a show I would recommend anyone to try. Bring a helper, the crowds here are overwhelming! Bring lots of inventory because it’s not unheard of here for artists to run completely out. There’s a wood carver just down from our booth that has run out of inventory mid day on Sunday the last two years. If you are going to apply to this show, do it early. Application deadline is in January for this September show.
