This show is held along Eighth Street South and in the adjacent Cambier Park, in a very well-to-do area of Naples. Neighboring streets offer high-end shops and restaurants. The Festival is well advertised to people who buy art, not just to tire kickers and people out for a weekend stroll. This was our third year for doing this show, and most of our sales were to people with homes in Naples as well as in other parts of the country. They come here to buy art for both homes, so be prepared to ship!
Saturday's weather was perfect, but rain was predicted for all day Sunday. AGAIN, the weatherman was wrong - imagine that! It did rain on Sunday morning for a short time; the rest of the day was a bit windy, but, overall, it was a nice day. Crowds came out by late morning, and shoppers were carrying off large purchases.
For Patty and me, sales were a bit down from last year, making this a slightly below-average show for us. We sold two pieces, and the average ticket was slightly over $2,000. I spoke with two watercolor artists: One reported an average show, while the other was slightly below average. However, one oil painter reported well above-average sales.
Two wood artists reported differing results: One had average sales, the other below average. A sculptor reported sales well above average, a photographer did average business, and a glass artist reported an average take.
Award money totaled $8,000. The only grumbling I heard was about the judging - that hardly ever happens!
Breakdown required minor dollying, depending on your booth locations and how large your vehicle was. Smaller vehicles could pull right up, while artists with larger vehicles had to dolly or wait. If your booth was in the park, you had to dolly over grass, so bring a good one if you're assigned that area.
The director of the show, Richard Sullivan, is one of the most personable, intelligent directors we have ever worked with. He loves art and truly understands that to have a successful show, people must show up and buy art, not just show up and walk around. That is something that it missing at a lot of the shows we do.
