This is one of our best shows of the year! Crowds are enthusiastic, and there's an energy here that's hard to come by at other events.
Setup is after 3 p.m. on Friday and lasts well into the night. Depending on where your booth is, you can either park right next to it or do some minor dollying. Security is very tight, with personnel checking IDs and very official-looking name badges for artists, vendors and VIPs. (Patty and I walked to our booth after dinner Sunday night to pick up a few things and had our IDs checked by two different security guards.)
This year, the weather was perfect all three days, and the crowds came out to shop. A wood artist said he was two pieces away from having his best show ever. A painter said last year's show was her best show ever but that this year's was just slightly behind that. A second painter said her sales were down from previous years', but she still had a slightly above-average event.
A jeweler reported sales of $37,000, a well-above-average show! A potter said this year's sales were very strong, which is par for the course at the Grove. A digital artist said sales were well above average, and although a paper artist said sales were down slightly from previous years, it was still an above-average show for the exhibitor. For us, sales were down from last year, but we still a good show. (We have some appointments coming up that may improve sales totals.)
The only complaint I heard from many artists this year was that music was way too loud at the many stages scattered around the show. "You could not even speak with people in our booth," said one artist. We had the same experience for part of the show, too, as our booth was across from the children's stage, which was quiet for part of the time and way too loud at other times!
Breakdown here can be a bit hectic, so we choose to break down partially and go out to dinner. We come back after most artists have gone, pull right next to our booth and load up. It's so much easier than fighting the masses.
Every artist I spoke with said they hoped to be back next year. This really is an awesome show!
