This show is the poster child for community involvement in an art show. It’s put on by the Junior League. The Mayor, city councilmen, rotary and other groups are there helping out. There is a real feeling of community spirit here. Patrons come to this show and spend money because of the community connection.
Set-up is the day before, it’s very well organized and well run. Most spaces you can park very close and unload, some spaces have minor dollying across grass. This year there was some construction in the park, a few spaces were eliminated or moved to different areas.
This is our third year for doing this show and it’s one of our favorites. It’s in a beautiful park surrounded by sprawling live oak trees. The weather was perfect for an art show, lower 80’s and lots of sun. We have a pretty good mailing list in this area and it paid off well this weekend. I sold two large pieces on Saturday and two medium pieces on Sunday to have a well above average show here. About 75% of the artists I spoke with here said this is usually a good show for them and they look forward to coming here every year.
A metal sculptor, a jeweler and a painter all reported above average sales. A photographer reported below average sales but blamed it on being in one of the newly created spaces that had very little traffic. Another photographer reported a zero show, was very upset and would not return. He said he passed out lots of cards but no one bought. A clay artists reported above average sales and would be back.
Last year here I had a zero show, sold nothing. I passed out a lot of cards and everyone around me was selling so I figured it was just not my weekend. This is the only show that we have done this poorly at and returned to try again. Sometimes I think we give up too early on shows. It paid off for me this year with a well above average show.
Breakdown was very smooth, I chose to go out to dinner and return later to pack up. With a truck and trailer it’s tough to get close to our booth without blocking others. I came back 90 minutes later and had all the space I needed.
I really look forward to coming here every year, it’s just a very pleasant show to be a part of.
