This is the largest art show we do, it's made up of five different shows all running together, right next to each other. Each show has some slight advantages or disadvantages from the neighboring shows but all get very heavy traffic from an enthusiastic art buying crowd. Low to moderate priced work sells extremely well here because of the sheer volume of buyers. Higher priced items can do very well here if you don't mind waiting around for the few that do buy.
Setup is the day before and well organized. Depending on which show you are in and where your booth is will depend on if you will have to dolly and how far. Some booths have room for storage in the back or sides while others have none. This is definitely a show to bring a helper, crowds here can be overwhelming at times!
This year the weather was unseasonably hot and crowds were down, by some estimates, almost half what they have been in the past. This was our sixth year for doing the show and sales were very hard to come by. We sold only four small pieces with average ticket of $1,000.00. Our sales were down 60% from previous years.
I spoke with a sculptor that said this is usually his best show of the year and sales for him were down but it still turned out to be an above average show for sales. I spoke with three painters, one reported an average show, saved by one patron that bought three pieces on Sunday. The other two both reported well below average sales, one said he will not return next year. A fabric artist said her sales were down 50%, a photographer said sales for him were also way down. I spoke with two wood artists, one reported his worst show there in 12 years, the other reported below average sales and commented that he would not return, too much work, long days for too little in sales.
Breakdown for most is about what you would expect for such a large show. It is well organized, you are required to break-down your booth entirely before receiving a pass that allows you to pull in and load up. We chose to come back about 9:00 pm and break-down after most have left. There's a street light not far from our booth so it's not too dark and it`s a lot less hectic.
We'll definitely be back next year to try again. The people that live in the homes along the show route treat the artists very well and this is one of our favorite shows of the year.
