January, 15-16, 2005 54th Annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art, Coral Gables, Florida. Contact: The Lowe Art Museum, 1301 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables, Fl. 33124. 305-284-3535
This show is on the campus of the University of Miami. There are 250 artists here spread out in front of and behind the Lowe Art Museum and $20,000.00 in award money divided up for 11 different categories. Set-up is on Friday and this year started at 9:00 am. Set-up is very organized and well run. There are plenty of friendly volunteers to answer questions and direct as necessary. Space for storage varies greatly depending on where your booth is. We had plenty of room behind and beside our booth and others had very little. Breakfast is provided for both days in the museum.
This is one of the few shows we have done for five straight years and we‘ve had the same booth space for all five. Our first and third years were very good for sales and our second and forth years were way down for sales. So this year, if trends prevailed, would be another good show. We all know how well art shows follow trends, yea right! This year we only sold one pretty good size piece and have the possibility for another really good sale, I’m trying to set up an appointment for a follow up sale. If that goes through it will have been a good show for us. If not it’s another down year.
I spoke with two photographers, one reported a slightly below average show the other reported barely making expenses. A metal worker making low cost animals said this year was another good year for them and will definitely return. A clay worker with a variety of things did not do well and will not be back. Two painters I spoke with both did not do well and were not sure if they will return. A clothing maker doing the show for the forth time did not do well but has done well there in the past will be back to try again.
Saturday it did rain here most of the day and it did cut down on traffic significantly. Sunday the weather was perfect and crowds were good with a smattering of artists in different mediums doing well. Crowds here can be very fickled when it comes to buying.
All artists agree that treatment here is good, good awards and judging getting the usual complaints. Set-up and breakdown are fairly easy and parking is close by.
