This is our seventh year in a row for doing this show that seems to be plagued by weather problems every year! Setup is on Friday, very well organized and well run. Parking is usually fairly close by with some spaces needing to dolly a short distance. The staff here is friendly and willing to help out any they can.
This year we had decided to request a different space. We had been in the same space for the past 6 years at one extreme end of the show and thought the change might help sales a bit. We requested and received a space more in the middle of the show. This show is very loyal to its returning artists and very accommodating when it comes to booth assignments.
Saturday was a perfect art show day with lots of sun and temps in the upper 70's. We had a few people in our booth that asked "Is this your first year here?" I thought this was going to be a good sign, people seeing our work in our new location! Shows what I know! I'm not sure what the reason but for us and many of our fellow artists noticed the crowds were way down from previous years. Even on a perfect weather day, there were not that many people at the show.
Sunday was overcast and it did rain off and on a bit through the day. Crowds again were way down from previous years. I'm not sure what went on here this weekend but it wasn't good for most artists I spoke with. This was our worst year for sales here, we did not make booth fees! We have done very well here in some years and other years were not as good but we always made a profit. This was our first show of the year and our last few shows of last year were not good. We're really hoping this is not a trend starting here. We need a good a show soon to pay some bills!!!
I spoke with five different photographers, one selling low priced work reported average sales, two reported slightly below average sales and two others reported well below average sales. Two mixed media artists reported, one had average sales totals while the other reported slightly below averages sales. A glass artist reported his best show ever there which was still a slightly above average show. A painter reported getting shut out completely with no sales, two wood artists both had well below average sales as did a potter I spoke with. And finally a sculptor reported well below average sales. Reports from artists on the subject of whether or not they would return ranged from no way to yes, definitely. We will definitely be back again next year for another try. This is usually a show we look forward to doing though another year like this one will change that.
Breakdown is a bit hectic with everyone try to pack up an go at the same time. There are only so many parking spaces close by and competition for them can be quite fierce. Some choose to park a little further away and dolly while others go out to dinner and wait for the madness to subside.
If you are combining this show with another show or you do not have to drive that far to get here, this can be a good show. I would not recommend driving across country to do only this show unless you want to escape the cold of the north and come relax on Miami Beach.
