2004 Beaux Arts Festival of Art
January, 17-18, 2004 53rd Annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art, Coral Gables, Florida. Contact: The Lowe Art Museum, 1301 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables, Fl. 33124. 305-284-3535
This show is on the campus of the University of Miami. There are 250 artists here spread out in front of and behind the Lowe Art Museum and $20,000.00 in award money divided up for 11 different categories. Set-up is on Friday and this year started at 9:00 am. Set-up is very organized and well run. There are plenty of friendly volunteers to answer questions and direct as necessary. Space for storage varies greatly depending on where your booth is. We had plenty of room behind and beside our booth and others had very little. Breakfast is provided for both days in the museum.
Saturday the weather was perfect and attendance was good. Most artists I spoke with said they thought attendance was down slightly from previous years. Two metal artists and 1 photographer I spoke with said they had good days, slightly better than last year. Most of the other artists I spoke with, including ourselves, were way down from last year. One photographer reported sales of $200.00 for Saturday, 3 other artists were shut out completely. We sold one small piece for $550.00.
Sunday morning was beautiful but the forecast was for rain later in the day. We sold two small pieces to the same customer and had a few near misses.
About 3:00 the rains came and washed out the remainder of the show. At 4:00 the staff announced you could break down early. Even with all the commotion break-down went smoothly. Some artists packed up right away, others chose to wait for the rain to stop.
We're hoping to close at least one more sale in the near future from this show which would bring us up to a respectable total but for now just the three pieces.
Several photographers, a wood artist and a metal artists all said they were way down from last year. One photographer and two other metal artists said they were up from last year. One first time photographer said he had a great show and plans to return, another first time photographer had a terrible show and plans not to return. One first time painter sold one original painting and was happy.
We feel there is a lot of potential here, this is usually a strong show, the quality of art here is very high. For the most part the patrons of this show are knowledgeable and successful. Although there are quite a few college students here with lots of interest and very little money.
One Fast Audit returned rated overall sales 4, quality of work and balance 10, treatment 8 and parking 5.3;
