This is a three day show, Friday through Sunday, with set-up on Thursday. The St. James Art show consist of 5 different shows all put on and run by separate neighborhood associations. They do work together to coordinate the show. All totaled there are 700 artists spread over a 4 block area. This show is huge! Quality ranges widely from section to section, from some crafty buy/sell items to very fine art. The show is very well attended, approx 300,000 over three days. People come from miles around to buy at this show.
Set-up is very well organized and ranges from park next to your space for the weekend to dolly a block or so, depending on which show you are in and where your booth is.
Most of the artists that have been doing this show for years report that it is generally a slightly above average show for them with an occasional best show of the year hidden in the mix. This year again most artists I spoke with said sales for them were slightly above an average show. There were two that said this year sales were down. For us, we were in a new and much better spot than in the previous two years and for us sales were up. We sold six pieces most of which were our large expensive pieces. I spoke with three painters, all said they did well and planned on returning. A photographer, a sculptor and jeweler all reported good sales and planned on returning next year. I did speak with one glass artists doing the show for the first time that was not pleased with his sales and said he would probably not be back.
If at all possible bring a helper to this show, be prepared for lots of talking and your booth full of inquiring patrons.
One of the really nice things about this show is once you are in, you are in for as long as the quality of your work remains high and you continue to have new pieces. There is a walking jury that comes around Sunday and invites you back for next year, no jury fee! All that’s required of you is a deposit for your space next year. We are looking forward to next years show.
Break-down again is very well organized and well run. Lots of volunteers to assist in traffic flow and breakdown is required before bringing in your vehicle.
