February 12-13 19th Annual Boca Raton Museum of Art Festival of Art. Mizner Park, Boca Raton, Fla. Contact: Boca Raton Museum of Art, 501 Plaza Real, Mizner Park, Boca Raton, Fla. 33432. www.bocamuseum.org 561-392-2500.
How easy your set-up is for this show depends on where your booth is located and how early you want to get there. Set-up was smooth, unloading was close by for most people. Parking was a bit of a hike and the lot filled up so buy late morning some artists had to find alternate parking. The staff at the show is friendly and helpful, coffee and bagels are served in the museum. This show is in a very upscale shopping center with lots of restaurants, shops and art galleries.
The weather was perfect this year and crowds were out shopping. How well you do here seems to depend a lot on where your booth is. If your on a side street or at one extreme end of the show you don’t get as much traffic as center. This is our third year for doing this show and we’ve been in three completely different locations. This year I thought our location was better being that we were on the main street but turned out we were one block too far north and 1/3 of the traffic simply turned around before getting to us.
This show can be good if you are in the right space. One oil painter said she had her best show ever, reporting sales over 10,000.00 for the first time ever. We had a below average show but will definitely be back to try again in a different spot next year. I spoke with three different photographers, one did very well, one did well and one was not happy and will not return. The first two will definitely return. Two jewelers were both happy and will be back, one commented “These people love jewelry!” Two wood workers I spoke with had differing results, one had an average show and will return the other had a way below average show but will be back to try again, commenting that last year here was his best show ever.
This is a show where about 50% of the artists report good sales and are very happy. The other 50% range from ok to poor. All give high marks to organization, staff, advertising and treatment. It’s a well run, well established show with a good following. There are a lot of art shows in this area, more than once a month in season, so sales here are a bit diluted. This is the only show we do here, the others are all either promoter shows or smaller shows. This show has $15,000.00 in awards, 250 spaces and receives over 1000 applications. It’s the only show in the area that we even apply to.
Break down is about the same as set-up, it depends where your booth is. Some are able to park right next to their booths while others are forced to dolly a bit.
