Setup for this show starts early Saturday morning, 2:00 am for those that want to brave the night air to do so. Patty and I are not that ambitious anymore. We got there at 8:00 and were able to park our trailer next to our space for unloading. We saw lots of artists dollying also. Just depends on where your booth is and how patient you want to be.
Quality of art here is very high, many of the artists here are going on to Coconut Grove the following weekend. At this show there is plenty of nearby parking, crowds are not quite so over whelming and there are lots of great restaurants next to the show. Sales here seem to be on one extreme or the other. Some artists do really well here while others don't make expenses. It's been that way for us here also, some years doing really well and others not so good.
Booth location are really important here, there are still areas that get very little traffic. I saw one artist moving his tent Saturday evening because of very poor traffic Saturday afternoon.
The weather was great both days and crowds were steady. Sales for us this year were down from previous years with several near misses we hope will still come through later. The eternal optimist keeps me going! I spoke with a wood artist that had his best show here in years and was very happy. I spoke with an artist selling leather purses and bags that had a great show. I also spoke with a Judaic artist that reported very strong sales. Those three artists were the only ones reporting good sales. I spoke with three photographers, all were way down from recent years, one did not make expenses. Two jewelers both reported disappointing sales, three painters I spoke with had below average sales, one did not make expenses. A Sculptor said smaller priced items sold but overall sales were below average.
It seems everyone we spoke with said sales have been down all over Florida this year. This show seems to have fallen victim to same fate for this year.
Ease of breakdown was again depending on booth location. I saw some dollying, others pulling their vehicles in fast to get a close by space and others leaving the madness behind in search of a good meal, relaxation and breaking down later once things cleared out. We had a parking space close to our booth, I was lucky enough to have agreeable neighbors that moved their vans slightly for us and made room for our truck. Thanks very much!
We will definitely apply again next year and hope bigger fortunes to come!
