This show is put on by the City of Richardson, Tx. and after 39 years of doing so they really have everything running well. Very well organized, well run, great quality of art, lots of amenities, Friday setup, artist party Friday evening, good size booth spaces and plenty of art buyers. What more could you ask for?
Setup can be a long day here with waiting in line for a spot to open up near your booth but its very well organized. If you choose to volunteer your time by visiting one of the local schools you get a move to the head of the line pass and waiting times are cut drastically. Artists get one hour to park fairly close to their booth for unloading then another artist from that area gets their turn. The local boy scout troop is there working for tips to help with loading and unloading if you choose to use their help.
This was our second year for participating here and we had done well here last year. I spoke with several artists that have been doing this show for 20 years or more. The only concern for this years show was the weather and again the forecast was 100% wrong! 10% chance of rain on Saturday and it pretty much rained very lightly off and on all day. The crowds were slightly lighter than usual, probably due to the weather. There was a 40% chance of strong thunder storms on Sunday and the talk by most artists was whether to pack up early or not. Severe storms and tornados had been pounding this area for several weeks now so concern was very high. Not a drop a rain or gust of wind for the entire day! It was a bit overcast which kept temperatures down so that worked out well and again crowds were off slightly.
We sold 3 pieces, all on Sunday with an average ticket of just over $3,000.00 and made just about what we made here last year. I spoke with a graphics artists that her best show ever here selling several large originals. I spoke with two jewelers, one reported an above average show and the other said sales were about average. I spoke with three photographers, one with average sales, one below average and one did not make expenses. A mixed media artist said sales for her were down but this is usually a strong show for her. Two painters reported, one had a well above average show the other was slightly below average. Every artist I spoke with said they would return except for the photographer that did not make expenses.
Breakdown this year was a bit more hectic with the threat of strong storms looming. Last year we chose to go to dinner first and come back later once it had thinned out a bit. This year we were planning on doing the same but changed strategy with the threat of rain. Packing up dry is always a huge motivator. We were able to find a parking space about two blocks away and dollied our stuff over. Again not a drop all evening.
We'll definitely be back next year for this fun and profitable event.
