This is another very artist friendly show but with a strict policy for their rules. Don't even think of showing up here and trying anything funny. The show has a standards committee that takes their job very serious. You'll be asked to leave early on Saturday. Honestly, most artists wish more shows would enforce their rules like this!
This show has a lot of support from the community and a very large artist patron program. There is a artist welcome/ patron appreciation party on Friday night. Open bar and lots of really good food make this a must attend for everyone. The show also provides a catered breakfast and lunch both days.
Setup is early Saturday morning, the show is on a major street in downtown Deland. Depending on where your booth is will depend how close you can get to unload. For most, setup is very easy for an early morning, street show. Parking is close by and all free.
The weather was great this year except for a little cold, temps in the 40's for setup. Once the sun came up it warmed up and was in the 70's with lots of sun both days. Last year our sales dropped off drastically here so we were hoping for a good year. Our hopes were dashed, we only sold one small piece and ended with a well below average show, we barely made expenses. This was our sixth or seventh year here, we may have to skip a year before trying again. I spoke with two painters one reported a well above average show the other well below average, two photographers reported, one slightly above average, one below and a wood artist reported above average sales.
This show can be very good for a few of the artists. We have sold some of our largest pieces here in the past. Unfortunately there are still too many artists that do not do well here. That seems to be a sign of the times though, not just at this show.
Breakdown is very organized for a street show. Volunteers try to coordinate vehicles so that every artist can pull in front of their booth, some artist choose to dolly. There is lots of room on the sidewalk in front of our booth, we breakdown and put everything on the sidewalk, pull our trailer in, load up and go. The show ended at 5:00 and we were driving away at 5:45. Anytime we can breakdown and load up in under an hour, we are very happy.
