This show is on the main street in Downtown Deland, about 25 miles northeast of Orlando. It’s put on by the Deland Museum with lots of enthusiastic support from the community. There is a reception Friday night, dinner Saturday night and breakfast and lunch both days of the show. Skip at least a few of these meals because there are some fabulous restaurants within walking distance of the show.
Set-up is early Saturday morning, well organized and well run. There’s plenty of nearby free parking for artists and there’s room for storage behind some booths or across the street on the sidewalk.
The weather forecasts for this weekend were not good so we weren’t quite sure what to expect. This was our fifth year in a row for doing this consistently average show. We’ve never hit it really big here but we’ve never bombed here either.
Saturday we had two customers that had bought from us at previous shows come by and made our weekend. The first bought three small pieces, the second bought one large piece. This is what we usually make here for the entire weekend and it came on the first day! The morning weather was really great. It sprinkled a little off and on throughout the afternoon.
Sunday it rained off and on all day, it didn’t rain really hard until about 2:30, lasted till about 3:00 and at that point the crowds were gone and show personnel gave us the go ahead to start packing. We made a couple connections for future shows or web sales on Sunday but nothing to add to our totals. So again this year we had an average show for sales, I’m very happy with that. Our average is still pretty good!
A glass artists only sold one piece and had to come down on price to get that sale. He’s been there for a few years and will try again next year. A photographer doing his first show ever was shut out completely, I’m sure weather played a role in that. Another photographer said sales for him were very slow also. A mixed media artist sold a couple of large pieces and had a slightly above average show.
Breakdown was a bit hectic, trying to get everything put away before it started raining again. The weather did hold off long enough for us to get out of there.
We really enjoy doing this high quality art show and will be back again next year. This is a show that about half of the artists I speak with do well, the other half not so well. The only way you will know if your work will sell here is to try it for yourself.
