12th Annual Deland Fall Festival of the Arts, Deland, Fl. Contact: P.O. Box 3194, Deland, Fl. 32721. Ph. 386-738-5705. Email: info@delandmuseum.com
This show is in Downtown Deland along the main highway surrounded by antique and art shops and really great restaurants. Deland is a few miles Northeast of Orlando. The show is put on by the Deland Museum of Art and lots of eager volunteers. There’s $25,000.00 in award money, another $8,000.00 in patron awards along with a reception Friday night, an artist oasis with breakfast and lunch, booth sitters and Sunday morning brunch with the award ceremony.
Set-up is early Saturday morning, booth spaces are back to back and 12 feet wide. There are parking lots all long the show so every booth has a spot close by. Depending on where your booth is you can either park very close by or have to dolly a short distance. This is one of the most organized set-up and break-downs of all the shows we do.
The quality of work here is very high. There’s even a standards committee that reviews every booth to make sure the quality in your booth matches the quality in your slides. If you do buy-sell work, don’t bother applying here, you’ll be asked to leave shortly after set-up Saturday morning.
There are 205 spaces at this show, attendance is around 25,000, published at 60,000 but no way. Most of the work at this show is very high quality and high end work. Unfortunately most of the people at this show are not high end buyers, they just come out to be amazed. This is our fourth year for doing this show, three of the four years were slightly below average and one was an above average show. This year was slightly below average. Although our shows lately have been so bad we were really happy with our totals here. Sales totals here are all over with some very happy and others very unhappy. A jeweler was very happy with an above average show, I spoke with two photographers, one was happy with an average show and one was very unhappy. I spoke with two glass sculptors, one was happy with a slightly below average show and one barely made expenses, a basket maker had a very bad show.
The bottom line here is there are not enough high end art buyers here to support 205 artists. If you reduce the size of the show then you’ll probably reduce the number of people that attend the show, people like to have a choice. Your best bet for this show is come and enjoy the town and it’s people and hope you are one of the artists that do well. Probably 70-80% of the artist do well here, some of them can hit it big and do very well.
The majority of complaining at this years show was about the judges, just dreadful! Even artists that won awards commented on the pieces that were chosen were not even close to their best work. All in all most were please with their experiences here, will definitely be back next year and had good things to say. The people that put this show on work very hard and it shows, this show should be a model for how to run an art show in a small market town.
