This show spans 6 blocks on Fourth Avenue with no booths on side streets except food vendors. A great way to lay out a show, if any show directors are reading my reviews! Fourth Ave in Tucson looks and feels like San Francisco in the 1960’s. There are lots of thrift stores, tattoo parlors, head shops, fortune tellers and few really neat restaurants. This is not a market for high end buyers or sellers. A lot of the people here are from California and still stuck in the 60’s, lots of tie-die clothing, patchouli and dreadlocks.
Set-up was on Thursday with no real time for starting given. We arrived early and had to wait several hours to begin. There were plenty of volunteers and staff nearby to answer questions. It was fairly well organized and lasted long enough that some came early like us and others waited till later.
Friday had decent crowds but very few buyers. Saturday and Sunday had better crowds but very few high end buyers. We only sold one piece all weekend for a well below average show for us. I spoke with the director of the show, he wants to try and attract more high end artists and buyers here in the future. He’s got some great ideas, if he can put them into place it might just work. For now, this is just not our market.
I spoke with one photographer that had a below average show, a clothing artist was slightly down from last year. Two mixed media artists that had done well here in the past both said they were way down and doubtful if they would return. Next to us was a booth of people collecting names for selling time-shares and giving away a Home Depot shopping spree. We had to listen to them all weekend yelling at people as they walked by to come over and sign up.
Break-down was the typical madness after a street show with some choosing to dolly. We did our usual go out to dinner and came back later after most had left.
I really like the area and the people here. If radical changes can be made to attract more high end buyers I would definitely come back here. Until then we are going to pass.
