2004 Frederick Festival of Arts
June 5-6 Frederick Festival of Arts, Frederick, Md. Contact: Frederick Fest of Arts, P.O. Box 3080, Frederick, Md. 21705, 301-694-9632 Web: www.frederickarts.org
This show runs along the banks of a small creek with concrete sides in Downtown Frederick, Md. It's a very artsy place with paintings on the sides of the bridges and surroundings. The booths are along the sides of the creek with plenty of room for storage behind. Set-up is on Friday, very well run and relaxed. Pull in front of your booth, unload then park close by.
Frederick, Md. is approximately 30 miles from Washington D.C. and 40 miles from Baltimore. It's a small town close enough to two large cities to draw patrons from both areas.
Saturday was an artists worst nightmare, cold (55 degrees), windy and raining. Many artists showed up, waited around for awhile, chose not to open up and went home for the day. Even the food vendors chose not to open up. Several tents were damaged by the wind and rain and those artists packed up and left. We had driven 1000 miles to be there so we stayed open. It finally started to ease up around 1:30 and few patrons came out to walk the show. We had zero sales for the day and most artists we spoke with reported the same.
Sunday the weather was better and this started to look like an art show. Booths were open and the show was pretty well attended. We made four sales on Sunday, all of which were people that had seen our work on Saturday and returned on Sunday to buy. Be-backers, actually came back!
Every artists we spoke with said sales were way down from previous years and blamed Saturdays weather. For us it turned out to be a slightly below average show. A first year painter sold one painting and said that is her usual average show. A photographer doing the show for the second time did very poorly and said he may not be back. Another photographer doing the show for the third time also did very poorly and said he may not be back either. A wood worker doing the show for the first time also did poorly and may not be back.
Important note about this show. Next year construction is forcing a temporary new location for the show. In the past that usually spells disaster for a show and we will definitely try something new for this time next year. We had heard such great things about this show from other artists, expensive fine art is supposed to sell well here. I am becoming very gun-shy about doing art shows in small towns. Expensive art just doesn't seem to sell well for us.
