This was a first time show put on by the director of the very successful Naples National Art Show, Richard Sullivan. All of the 150 artists here were invited to participate with no jury fee. Send in your application and you’re accepted. Richard hand picked the artists from his favorites at the Naples National shows. The quality of artwork at this show was amazing! This was a virtual who’s who of top artists from around the country, we felt honored to among those participating.
We made a rule several years back to never do another first time show. We’ve had such bad experiences with them. But when such an experienced show director invites you to his first time show we decided to break our rule.
Set-up was Friday evening and would have gone much more smoothly if this experienced group of artists would have just bothered to read the information in the check in packet. Unload your vehicle first then set-up. Isn’t that kind of standard at all shows we do when there’s only one lane for unloading? A small group of prima donna artists that block the only lane for traffic by unloading one thing at a time and setting up their booths as they unload made it difficult for the rest. There was plenty of parking nearby for all artists.
The weather was perfect both days and for a first time show traffic was pretty good. Crowd estimates were between 7000-9000 total for the show. If you’ve ever done a show in Naples you know what a high end crowds shops there and this was no different. We saw a fair number of good sized pieces being carried to cars both days. A painter doing large painting sold two originals for 12,000.00 total. A sculptor sold several good sized pieces for a total of 6,000.00. A photographer reported sales of 4,000.00. We did not sell anything at this show but do have a couple of good leads that might work out for us later. About half of the artists I spoke with did not make expenses but most remained positive and said they would give the show another try. We also will try again here, there is so much potential for great sales here, it just did not happen for us this weekend.
Break down was pretty well organized, Richard walked around and spoke to each artist individually to ask them all to break down their display first then load out. Amazingly how much smoother things go when we do what we know we are supposed to do.
