2004 Mayfaire By The Lake
May 8-9, 33rd Annual Mayfaire By The Lake, Lakeland, Fl. Contact: Polk Museum of Art, 800 East Palmetto Street, Lakeland, Fl. 33801, 863-688-7743 www.polkmuseumofart.org
This is a very well run, very organized show from the application process to break down Sunday night. The show is on the banks of beautiful Lake Morton with ducks, swan and geese entertaining all weekend. Spaces are 12 feet wide with lots of room behind for storage, so much room that we were able to set up two tents, one behind the other.
Set-up is on Friday, very organized and laid back. Parking is close by on side streets and not far away is a large lot for campers and trailers.
This is usually the last Florida show for most artists, it's the second weekend in May and typically hot. Most veteran artists of the show refer to this event as "Bake By The Lake."
This year temperatures were in the mid to upper 80's, not as hot as in previous years. Lot's of sunshine and good crowds for both days. Sales here ran the gamut from very poor to very well. There are quite a few artists that have been doing this show for years, love coming here and plan on returning for as many years as they can. This was our second time doing the show and this year was down from our first time. We had a couple of near misses here that would have made this a good show for us but this year it just didn't happen. We did make enough that we'll definitely apply again next year.
I spoke with three painters, one had an above average show, one a below average show but still happy and one a way below average show. Two photographers reported, one an above average show and one slightly below average. The three jewelers I spoke with seemed to be the most happy, two reported having above average shows and one slightly below average. A potter said his was an above average experience and a wood worker had below average sales. Everyone gave the show and staff high marks and all but one said they planned on returning next year.
There were $14,500.00 in awards and another $10,000.00 in patron dollars, the staff came around twice a day with cold bottled water and a little breakfast goody bag Saturday morning. This is a very pleasant show to do, a beautiful setting, friendly people and most reporting average to above average sales.
