2004 Naples National Art Show
February 21-22, The 25th Annual Naples National Art Show, Cambier Park, Naples, Fl. Contact: Richard Sullivan, The von Liebig Art Center, P.O. Box 839, Naples, Fl. 34106 Ph. 239-513-2492. www.naplesartcenter.org e-mail: artfest@naplesartcenter.org
This show is located in Cambier Park and on 8th Street adjacent to the park in downtown Naples. This was our first year doing the show and our booth was in the park between two large shady trees. This is a beautiful setting for an art show.
Set-up is on Friday and staggered depending on your space number, it's very well organized. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There's no driving of vehicles in the park so be prepared to dolly across grass and sandy areas. There was lots of room for storage behind booths and 12 foot wide spaces made it possible to hang work on booth sides of the booth. There were plenty of spaces for parking along the perimeter of the park for unloading. Festival parking for artists during the show was close by.
Saturday the weather was perfect and the show was well attended. There is a two dollar voluntary donation fee to enter the show. Artists in the park had plenty of shade and were a lot more comfortable then those on the street but seemed to get less traffic. Artists on the street were on the asphalt in direct sun and quite a bit warmer than in the park. Most of the artists I spoke with in the park were doing the show for the first or second time. The artists on the street were seasoned veterans of the show.
Saturday for us was a pretty good day, we sold two pieces and hoped for a little better on Sunday. A photographer in the park reported a zero day, a painter sold one original piece and a bronze sculptor had an appointment Saturday night after the show where he sold one large piece. A photographer and a potter on the street both reported doing very well. The crowds tended to be a little older, fairly well to do and educated. Be prepared to ship your work because a lot of the patrons are on vacation or have homes up north as well as Florida.
Sunday was a bit slower for us with only one piece sold but it was a pretty good size piece. This was a slightly below average show for us sales wise. I feel like if we come back and try again we'll do better. A photographer in the park sold two pieces, one small and one large and said this was not his crowd and was not sure if he would return. A first time jeweler in the park said they had two good days and would definitely return. One oil painter in the park said it was her best show ever. The photographer and potter on the street were happy with their sales and would definitely return. Most of the veterans of the show said this is usually an above average show for them sales wise and plan on returning.
Breakdown was pretty much do as you please. There was still no driving in the park but we had no trouble finding a parking spot on the park perimeter and dollied out.
Overall this is a very pleasant show to do. There is a stage in the park with entertainment both days with two different guitar players. The volume was good and the music was relaxing. There was $8,000.00 in award money and we heard the usual griping of "the judges never came in my tent." I personally saw one judge about five feet from my tent and when I made eye contact with her she turned around and went the other way. Thirty minutes later I saw a sticker on my booth sign and thought, "Wow, how did that get there?"
Show director, Richard Sullivan, was very friendly and made you feel like he was glad you were there. He sat with me for about 15 minutes on Sunday and was happy to answer any questions I had concerning the show. He runs a tight ship with a very pleasant demeanor. I look forward to doing the show again if they'll have us.
