February 26-27, The 26th Annual Naples National Art Show, Cambier Park, Naples, Fl. Contact: Richard Sullivan, The Von Liebig Art Center, P.O. Box 839, Naples, Fl. 34106 Ph. 239-513-2492. www.naplesartcenter.org e-mail: artfest@naplesartcenter.org
This show is located in Cambier Park and on 8th Street adjacent to the park in downtown Naples. This was our second year doing the show and our booth was on the street. This is a beautiful setting for an art show.
Set-up is on Friday and staggered depending on your space number, it’s very well organized. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There’s no driving of vehicles in the park so be prepared to dolly across grass and sandy areas. . There were plenty of spaces for parking along the perimeter of the park for unloading. Festival parking for artists during the show was close by. This is one of the most artist friendly shows you will ever do! This is another area with a lot of art shows, at least two a month for six months. If you are going to do only one of those shows, this is the one! $8,000.00 in awards, 265 spaces and over 1,000 applications. If you do any of the other shows in Naples get used to people asking you if you are coming back to do this one. This is show where people come to buy! There’s lot’s of money here, a lot of the people that live in Naples also own homes somewhere else up north so be prepared to ship large purchases.
This year the weatherman tried as hard as he could to threaten us but the art show Gods prevailed and let the show go on. Friday afternoon it rained pretty hard off and on so set-up for some was very messy. We set up after 6:00 pm and it only sprinkled very lightly. The forecast for Saturday was really bad and even worse for Sunday. Thunderstorms both days! Saturday the rain held off till about 4:30 and it only rained for about 5 minutes. Saturday the weatherman said 90% chance of thunderstorms on Sunday and when we woke up to go to the show it was raining pretty hard. The rain stopped about 8:00 am and the rest of the day was dry. Several artists broke down Sunday morning in the rain not wanting to waste their day and risk loosing their work. They missed a pretty good day, it got a bit windy from time to time but it never rained. The artists that stuck it out were treated to putting their tents away dry! This was one of those days where you’d like to find the weatherman and slap the crap out him! How can someone with all that equipment be so totally wrong?!
Sales for us were very good with an above average show. I spoke with four photographers, three were very happy with above average shows and one with a slightly below average show. All said they would return. Two jewelers were happy with average to above average sales. Two wood workers were happy with averages sales totals. I spoke with three glass artists, two did well, one did not. Two painters reported good sales. All but one artist I spoke with said they did well enough to return.
A few more artists started breaking down mid day hearing rumors of approaching storms and tornados close by. I’m not sure who started these but the longer the day went the worse they got. Later in the day the sun even came out, where’s that weatherman!
Weather wise this was the strangest show we have ever done! I hate to ignore weather forecasts because we’re at their mercy being out in the elements under a tent with little or no insurance. I’m glad we stuck it out this time, those that did were rewarded with a good day.
