This show is located in a very upscale shopping center called the Country Club Plaza with great restaurants, hotels and shops. Setup is staggered on Friday morning/afternoon and was pretty well organized. Booths are on the street back to back with a minimal amount of storage behind each booth. The show starts at 6:00 pm on Friday night and the crowds come out in huge numbers. This was by far the most crowded show we have done in a while. The show was supposed to go till 10:00 pm but a storm came through about 8:45 and pretty much put an end to the show for the night.
Saturday and Sunday the weather was good, a little warm but not too bad. Crowds during the day are pretty steady, very art savvy, intelligent and eager to buy. Around 5:00 look out, it really gets busy, the crowds tend to be a bit younger and consume mass quantities of beer. The local restaurants have very elaborate booths set up at the show and the food here is better than any show we have ever done. It's worth coming here just for the food!
Who am I kidding, we drove 1500 miles to sell. We actually only sold two pieces but both were large pieces, an average ticket of $5,000.00. We sold lots of our 75.00 reproductions and 15.00 magnets making this a well above average show for us. I spoke with a jeweler that reported sales as slightly below average and was unsure about returning. A painter and a ceramic artist both reported above average sales and said they would apply again. A wood artist reported well above average sales and would also come back.
Breakdown is typical for a street show, we again chose to avoid the craziness and went to dinner after the show. We came back 2 hours later and were one of only a hand full of tents left. We parked right next to our tent and broke down at a very relaxed pace.
This is one of the top shows in the country and receives 1500 applications for the 198 available spaces. If you get the chance to do this show, take it. Kansas City is a beautiful city and this is a very well run show with enthusiastic buying crowd. Bring a helper, the crowds are so large here it's tough to get away from your booth, even for a moment. Be prepared for lots of talking, our throats were sore for several days after the show from talking so much. Supposedly there's a nice artist oasis with refreshments but we were never able to get away from our booth long enough to go there. There's a really nice awards breakfast Sunday morning at the Intercontinental hotel, across the street from the show.
