This show is along first street, a few side streets and throughout a shopping center in Highland Park, a very upscale suburb of Chicago. The quality of artwork is second to none. Several artists I spoke with said this is traditionally been one of their best shows of the year. The crowds here are very art savvy and can afford large, expensive items. This is one of those shows where patrons come to buy.
Setup is Friday night or Saturday Morning and is very well organized. Amdur Productions does a very nice job making sure the artists are well taken care of. Most of the other promoter run shows we have done offer very little in the way of amenities. Amdur's shows have much more of the community show feel about them.
This was one of those perfect weather weekends for an art show. It was a little rainy early Saturday but it cleared up by show time with lots of sun and highs in the mid 70's. Attendance at this show is rated at over 200,000 and it gets very close to that here.
We sold four pieces total with an average ticket at just over $2,500.00 each. I spoke with a metal sculptor on Saturday evening that told me he had brought 16 pieces to the show and sold 15 of them on Saturday! A glass artist also reported above average sales. I spoke with three painters, all three reported below average sales. One of them said this is usually one of his strongest shows of the year. A sculptor that has been doing this show for years reported well below average sales and said all his shows this year have been way down. All I spoke with said they would return to try again here.
Breakdown was typical for a street show with some choosing to dolly while others waited for things to clear out a bit. Our booth was on one end of the street near where vehicles were supposed to exit. I spoke with the guard about backing down the short street to get to our booth instead of driving the whole length of the street. To my surprise we were allowed to take the short route, thanks for bending the rules for common sense sake.
This is one of those shows I'd recommend anyone to do. Travel from across the country to get here. If you get accepted to do this show, show up and enjoy!
