Oct. 9-11. 10th Annual Paradise City Northampton Art Show, Northampton, Mass. Contact: Linda Post, 30 Industrial Drive East, Northampton, Mass. 01060. Phone 800.511.9725 web: www.paradisecityarts.com
This is a three day show Columbus day weekend with set-up on Thursday and Friday. The art show is held in three different buildings and a large tent on the fairgrounds. The three buildings are actually horse barns that are cleaned out and carpeted to house the artists. The large tent also houses artists and is the entry point for the public. There’s a second large tent in the back of the buildings which houses booths from restaurants across the Northampton area.
The quality of art at the three Paradise city shows we have done have been second to none. You walk around the room in amazement at how creative and talented people can be. We are flattered and honored to be included in such an elite group of artists.
There are 275 artists at this show, about 75% of which are 3-D artists. There are a few very loyal artists to this show that have been coming since the first year. Most of the artists I spoke with said sales have over the past few years started to trickle down. “Too many artists, we did much better here when there were only 175 artists” was heard more than once. “They’re also doing the show twice a year now which has not helped sales either.”
About half of the 3-D artists I spoke with said this show is usually a slightly above average show for them but once every so often one or two couples will come in and make the show for them. About 75% of the 2-D artists I spoke with were not happy with their sales and most would not return. We had a nightmare zero show and will definitely not return.
Crowds are large and wait in line to pay 10 dollars to get in. Most patrons are amazed at the quality of art but few can afford the high end work. If you sell in the under 250.00 dollar range you do very well here. A few of the high end artists get lucky here with one or two sales of very large pieces that make their show but most I spoke with were disappointed overall with sales and a few of the long time artists said they were giving up on this show.
If you live close by and you want to take a chance with the very high booth fees here you may want to roll the dice and hope you’re one of few that get lucky. I would not recommend driving across country like we did to do this show. There are too many artists here that don’t do well. About 50% overall said they had a good show, 3/4 of them were planning on returning. The other 50% ranged from zero sales to broke even, about 1/3 of those said they will probably return and hope for better next time.
