This is our third year for doing Summerfair and we're starting find our way around a bit easier. Setup is on Thursday and most artists can pull either next to or behind their booths for easy unloading. Booths are spread out in this park with lots of room for storage behind.
This year it was brutally hot again, temps in the low to mid 90's all three days and crowds were down from last year. Storms in the area on Saturday and at the show on Sunday sure didn't help. This is usually a really strong show for most artists that have been doing Summerfair for a number of years. There are not a lot of art shows in the Cincinnati area so this is the show people come to buy art. Sales were down for us this year, selling only two pieces but both were large, our average sale was $4,000.00, making this still a slightly above average show for us.
I spoke with a jeweler and a glass artist that reported slightly above average sales also but we were the only three. Everyone else I spoke with reported sales totals of below average to way below average. I spoke with three photographers, two reported worse year ever for them, a jeweler, a painter, a glass artist, a potter and a metal artist all reported below average sales total. A fiber artist and a stained glass artist reported well below average sales totals.
Only two artists I spoke with said they were unsure if they would apply again. Everyone else, including us will be back to try again. Treatment of the artists here is very well above average with an artists oasis all three days, a really great breakfast on Sunday morning, 10,000.00 in awards and a very friendly staff.
Breakdown can be a bit hectic with everyone trying to get into the park at once. This year was not helped by rain just before the show closing. We went out to dinner first and came back later to breakdown and had the park mostly to ourselves, it`s a cooler at dusk. There is an option to come back on Monday for breakdown also.
I would recommend any artist in any price range of work to apply to this show. This is usually one of those shows worth traveling across country to do. Bring an umbrella for shade, a cooler with lots of ice and cold water, the heat can be down right stifling here.
