This is a long running show on Mill Avenue in Downtown Tempe, Az. There are upscale shops and restaurants and the campus of Arizona State University all nearby.
Set-up is Thursday night or early Friday morning. Well organized with lots of volunteers, it’s a bit hectic and spaces are tight. Once you are in with your vehicle it’s tough to get out. Artists are allowed to unload while setting up and block streets leaving no way out. There is limited room for storage behind some booths, no room for others.
The crowds here run the gamut from college kids to high end buyers. Crowds are strong all three days. Traffic varies greatly with booth location, you do not want to be on a side street here.
Sales for us at the show were slightly above average, we had several near misses that could have turned this into one of our best shows of the year but just could not close the sales. Considering we had traveled 2400 miles to be here, we had hoped for better. A low to mid range potter had her best show ever, a photographer had a slightly above average show, a painter that has been doing the show for years had a good show, she said this is usually a very strong show for her. If you have Christmas items or items that people can give for gifts you can do really well here. High end work is hit or miss here, if you hit it big you can do very well.
Break-down was a bit hectic to say the least. The experienced artists have found side streets to park on and dolly out, others tried pulling their vehicles on the street then waiting for an opening so they could leave. We went out to dinner, went back to the hotel and came back about 10:00pm. Our booth was there with only a few others, we pulled right up to it, packed up and left. We finish a bit later doing it this way but there are a lot fewer headaches!
It was a very enjoyable show to do, friendly staff, well run and lots of traffic. We combined this show with next weeks show in Tucson to complete our trip. Had we done better in Tucson we would definitely come back and try this show again. It is just too far to drive for one show and we haven’t found another show to combine with it. I would really like to try again some time in the future.
