If a group of artists ever got together and decided to design their own art show, this is how they would do it. Oh wait, that is what happened here. This show is put on by the Vero Beach Art Club and is the most artist friendly show you will ever do. How does parking behind your booth the entire weekend sound? 12 foot wide spaces with ample room all around means most artists can hang on both of their outside walls, without paying extra! This is one of the most beautiful locations for an art show that we do, it’s called Under the Oaks because the booths are scattered among huge live oak trees in a park. If you do any of the other shows in this area get used to being asked if you are coming back for this one. This is the one show where people come to buy.
Set-up is on Thursday for this three day show. We have a 7x12 foot trailer that we park directly behind our booth for the entire weekend. Set-up and breakdown could not be easier! The only problem this year was it rained really hard several days before the show and there were a few spots still muddy so a few artists had to be moved to higher ground. The staff here is very friendly and helpful, they handled the situation professionally and tried as hard as they could to make sure everyone was happy.
The big topic of conversation at this years show was how the two hurricanes that hit here last summer would affect sales at the show. There is still a lot of damage visible driving down the road and we kept hearing all weekend about how many homes were still under repair. Sales for us were slightly down from last year but this was still an above average show for us. We did sell more pieces than usual but our average sale ($800.00) was down. Most artists I spoke with said this is usually an above average show for them and this year again was above average. A wood box maker, average sale ($300.00), said he was one box away from this being his best show ever. One photographer, average sale ($400.00), said his total for the weekend was over $15,000.00. Another photographer reported dismal sales and did not make expenses. Two jewelers I spoke with were very happy with above average sales, two oil painters were happy with above average sales and two watercolorist were happy with their above average sales. Everyone I spoke with said they would return except the one photographer that did not make expenses.
There is a great catered affair on Friday night where $12,000.00 in prize money is awarded to the top four finishers in seven different categories. This is one of our favorite shows of the year to do. If you are a show director and you really want to make the artists at your show as happy as they can be, follow the model for Under the Oaks. They’ve taken care of every detail and really put on a great show!
