June 11-12, 31st Annual Wells Street Art Show in Old Town Chicago, Il. Contact: Chicago Special Events Management, 1960 N. Clybourn Ave, Rear Building, Chicago, Il. 60614. 773-868-3010 Web. www.chicagoevents.com
This was our second year for doing this show and we knew what to expect for Saturday morning set-up so it didn’t seem as bad. If you do this show be prepared for a really hectic set-up Saturday morning. Booths are back to back in the center of the street, there is room for storage across the street on the sidewalk. This show runs next to the Old Town Art Show.
Saturday was brutally hot with not much breeze and lots of sun but the crowds didn’t seem to mind. We were one piece away from having our best day ever. Sunday was overcast most of the day and not nearly as hot, crowds again came out to support this long running show.
Most of the artists I spoke with said this is usually an above average show for them. One jeweler said this year sales were about half what he did there last year and this was still an average show for sales. One glass artists said she applied to this show after reading my review of last years show said Saturday was a bit slow and I started to worry. Sunday was a really good day for her and this turned into her second best show ever. I felt better! Metal sculpture did very well with an above average show, pottery had a well above average show and a painter had an above average show. I did speak with a wood artist that was disappointed with sales but he said he would be back next year to try again.
The crowds that come to this show tend to be 30 years old and up with disposable income. We sold mostly big expensive pieces with average ticket at just over $2600.00. There are a few restaurant/bars at the south end of the show where drinking is pretty prevalent. It can get a bit rowdy but most seem to be well behaved.
This is one of those shows with long hours and with set-up and break-down will really wear you out but with strong sales we look forward to coming back again and again.
Break-down was your typical street fair chaotic situation. We chose to dolly several blocks to the parking lot and avoid pulling our truck down the street.
