The Wells Street Art Show is right down the street from it's older brother the Old Town Art Festival. It's in Downtown Chicago amidst the sky scrapers. It's on Wells Street and runs for several blocks. Booths are back to back in the middle of the street, only some booths have room for storage on the sidewalk across the street.
Setup for this show is on Saturday morning and in years past has been one of the most difficult we have ever done. The streets are tight for us truck and trailer artists and unloading can really be a chore. It's our third year here and we're learning a few short cuts. We actually were able to pull right next to our spots, unload and get out before getting blocked in. We saw one artist a few years back so disheartened by setup, he simply got back in his truck and went home after driving several hundred miles to get there. That's a tough setup! Be prepared not to get anything done in a hurry and pay for parking up front and you'll be ok.
This year the weather was absolutely perfect with lots of sunshine and temps in the lows 70's both days! The crowds on Saturday were as busy as we have seen at any art show, anywhere, period. It was packed!
Sales for us were down slightly from previous years but we still had a slightly above average total. We sold only two pieces but both were good size, our average sale was $3500.00. Other artists I spoke with ran the gamut for sales with some reporting way below average and others very happy. I spoke with two photographers, one selling lower priced pieces was very pleased with sales while the other selling higher priced pieces was way off from previous years here. A metal artist reported above average sales selling high priced items with a nautical theme. He told me another artist told him "don't bring your fish, they'll never sell in Chicago. He reported selling six to one customer! A painter reported well below average sales, a glass artist reported slightly below average sales.
All I spoke with planned on returning, there's a huge potential for really large sales here with big crowds of people with plenty of expendable income.
If you try to get out of here early bring a really good dolly and be prepared to use it! The show is over at 6:00pm and they usually do not let trucks and vans onto the street until somewhere around 9:00pm. In the past we have dollied several blocks after a long, hot day in the sun to get out of here. This year we actually found a parking space on a side street and only had to dolly about a block and a half. If I had to vote on the most physically demanding show we do, this is it. Setup, breakdown and everything in between can really be brutal here but we usually sell well so we keep coming back.
This is one of those shows I'd recommend to anyone to apply to except for the faint of heart. Be prepared to work your butt off but you can do really well here.
