2003 Yellow Daisy Festival
The Yellow Daisy Festival, Stone Mountain, Ga. Sept. 4-7. Contact Special Events Dept., P.O. Box 778, Stone Mountain, Ga. 30086. Set up for this show is all day long the day before so everyone is relaxed and takes their time. You can pay an extra $50.00 to set up two days before if you wish. The show is in Beautiful Stone Mountain Park every booth is surrounded by and under a thick canopy of trees. If you do this show bring your lights, not much sunlight gets through.
This is the show everyone in the area waits for. It's the only show we have ever done where people bring baby strollers and wagons and leave the kids at home. They load their strollers, wagons and suit cases till they're full and make several trips to and from the car. They'll walk around a lot of other shows looking, The Yellow Daisy they come to buy. Traditionally this is a country craft show but more and more fine artists are selling their work here.
This is our third year doing Yellow Daisy, the first two times we had done it are our best two shows ever. So we were excited about coming back to see what this year would bring. It's a four-day show and for us not much usually happens on Thursday and Friday. Some were very busy, small items, and some not so busy. Saturday and Sunday are the big ticket item days here.
For us this year we were down almost 50% of what we had done the year before, ouch! The good news was this was still our best show of the year. A kids tent maker next to us said this was his best show for the year and he was up from last year. A photographer doing the show for a second time said she was up from last year. A wood carver down from us brought 100 bears carved from tree trunks, on Sunday morning he was down to only five bears left and by mid-day they were all gone.
There's always the other side. A man making wooden figures for the yard was way down from previous years. A painter by us said she was down also. A photographer doing the show for the first time said it was a slightly above average show for him, he expects better in the future and will definitely be back. Another photographer I spoke with barely made expenses and will definitely not return.
According to SA this is the number one craft show in the country and is evolving into a bit of a fine arts show. It's always the weekend following Labor Day, if you have the weekend free I would give this show a try. There are no guarantees in this business but there are very few shows in the country that have the potential for sales that you can make here.
