Sept. 8-11 The 37th Annual Yellow Daisy Festival, Stone Mountain, Ga. Contact Special Events Dept., P.O. Box 778, Stone Mountain, Ga. 30086. App. Fee:40.00, Booth Fee: 500.00. Space size 10x20. Attendance 200,000 (Gate). 475 spaces, 1000 applications.
Set-up for this show is the day before or for a limited number of artists pay an additional 75.00 and set up two days before the show. It’s very well organized and booths are spaced far enough apart it’s usually a very easy set-up. If you have a large truck, RV or trailer it can get a little tight trying to get through some areas. This is one of the prettiest places to do a show, you’re under a canopy of trees in Stone Mountain Park. Bring lights, even on clear days booths are pretty shady.
This is the number one traditional craft show in the country and quite a few fine artists are finding great sales here also. This was our fifth year in a row here and this is usually one of our best shows of the year. Crowds are strongest in the mornings and early afternoon. Thursday and Friday are usually slow for fine artists, crafters selling inexpensive items usually do well all four days. Saturday and Sunday the expensive pieces usually sell best.
This year our sales were down 50-75% from previous years but this was still an above average show for us. That will give you an idea of how well we usually do here. A potter selling items 20.00-75.00 said this year was a killer show for him. A whimsical painter selling mostly prints said sales for her were very good this year. A teepee maker said sales were about average for YDF but down from last year. Others I spoke with said sales were way down. A painter that has been doing the show for years was down about 50%. A calligrapher selling items in the 10.00-30.00 range said sales were down about 50%. I spoke with several artists over on E loop and none of them were happy. There are five loops in this show, A-E. Traffic and sales are generally strong on loops A-D. E loop is off to one side and doesn’t get much traffic. Those I spoke with from E loop were so unhappy they said they would not return.
This is usually such a strong show for most artists involved. It’s the only show we do that patrons bring carts, wagons and suitcases to, to haul away what they have purchased. We will definitely be back next year hoping for better.
Break-down here gets a bit crazy the first few hours after the show. We usually go out to dinner, go back to the hotel for an hour or two and then go back after dark. It’s much quieter then and a lot less hectic. You can also choose to break-down on Monday. We’ve never waited around that long so I’m not sure what it’s like.
