This is one of those shows we look forward to every year. It's in a beautiful park setting among the pine trees and people come here to buy. Setup is on Wednesday for most, 75 artists can pay an extra fee and choose to setup on Tuesday and avoid the crowds on Wednesday. We've never done the Tuesday setup, Wednesday usually works very well for us. We have a large trailer and truck and usually have no trouble finding a place to park close by and dolly a short distance.
This year the weather was good and crowds come on all four days. For us, the first two days aren't usually good but Saturday and Sunday are usually are best days of the year. This has typically been our best show of the year, most of our other shows have been down this year so we weren't real sure what to expect here. I tried to break out of our slump by sending out extra newsletters and offering better deals this year. I'm not sure what happened this year but people came out and bought with a frenzy. We had a really great day on Friday and another really good day on Sunday and this year we had our best show ever, selling 12 pieces with an average ticket of just over $2,000.00 each! I spoke with a whimsical painter that had her best show ever and a wood worker also said he had his best show ever. The tee-pee maker next to us said he was down slightly from last year but this would still probably be his best show of the year. A soap maker said they were down about 15% from last year but this was still their best show of the year. An oil painter reported that she was down from previous years and this year was still a good show. A potter, here for the first time said reported sales at slightly above average and a photographer reported sales at slightly above average. A lithographer also said sales were down this year but still reported an above average show total.
This is mostly a country craft show but fine art does sell well here. We've spoken with several artists that have done the show and not done well here. It seems like abstracts and contemporary work tend not to do well here, this is a more traditional crowd.
Breakdown can be like any other large show with the majority of artists in a hurry to leave at the same time. We go out dinner and come back around 10:00 pm, it quiet and most other artists are gone by then. It's a long day but works much better for us not having to fight the crowds.
This is one of those shows I'd recommend to anyone selling traditional work, drive across the country to get here, it can be you best show of the year!
